How to Convert a Gas Grill to a Fire Pit

Building an outdoor fire pit creates an inviting place to enjoy family and friends. You may use fire pits for cooking food, provide heat, and roast marshmallows. Fire pits can be as primitive as a hole in the ground covered by stones or as elaborate as a pit built to a concrete deck surrounded by rock. It's possible to make a pit in an assortment of ways with cheap materials found at home improvement stores. One choice is to use your old gas grill in the building of the fire pit.

How to Convert a Gas Grill to a Fire Pit

Step 1

Shut off the gas supply to the grill. Loosen the retaining fitting securing the hose into the tank using a pair of channel lock pliers. Pull the hose off the tank and lift the tank off the grill.

Step 2

Open the lid of the grill and then slide the interior racks from the grill. Put them into the side. Lift the lava stones up and from the grill and drop them in a garbage can.

Step 3

Scrub the inside of the skillet with a wire brush to remove rust and debris, then wipe the inside of the grill clean. Set the racks back in the grill.

Step 4

Locate the burners beneath the body of this gas grill. Loosen these burners with an adjustable wrench and pull them off the grill frame. Put the burners from the trashcan.

Step 5

You can Remove the gas controls and any remaining accessories in the grill with the adjustable wrench. Discard the accessories and controls.

Step 6

Dig a hole that steps 1 to 2 inches wider than the width of the grill. The pit should be 6 inches deeper than the grill. Put a 6-inch layer of drainage gravel in the base of the hole.

Step 7

Place the empty grill body to the hole. Place your palms on the edges of the grill and press down slightly to place the grill to the ground. Fill the gap between the grill and the pit with gravel safe for use in fire pits.

Step 8

Place a row of cubes with angled sides so that they form curves when put against one another around the outside of the pit.

Step 9

Cover the top of the cubes with masonry adhesive. Specify a block on top of the glue-covered blocks. Center the league over the seams of 2 cubes. Continue in this fashion until you've got another row of blocks.

Step 10

Wait for 24 to 48 hours to let the masonry adhesive dry before you use the fire pit.
